Russian illegal prison on IZOLYATSIA premises has been operational for 10 years.

IZOLYATSIA Day 2017

On June 9, 2017, IZOLYATSIA marks the third year in exile. On that day, in 2014, the territory of the insulation materials factory in Donetsk hosting the foundation was seized by the armed representatives of the self-proclaimed “Donetsk People’s Republic” who declared their intention to use the space for the storage of Russian humanitarian aid. In reality, the area is currently used as a military base, a prison, a store for stolen cars, and as a setting for Russian video fakes. After the evacuation, IZOLYATSIA’s team has continued working outside Donetsk and resumed their activities in Eastern Ukraine, Kyiv and internationally.

The IZOLYATSIA Day is an opportunity to remember the Donetsk period of the foundation’s history (2010-2014) and gather friends. This year’s traditional retrospective programme is based around the Partly Cloudy international residency (2011) curated by Boris Mikhailov, a classic of the contemporary conceptual photography and a Hasselblad award-winning artist representing the national pavilion of Ukraine at the Venice biennale in 2017. The project presented reflections of eight participants from seven countries and their experiences during the research in several cities of the Donetsk region. One of the objects they studied was the abandoned Palace of Culture in Horlivka.

The photo exhibition House of Culture consists of works by Flavia Junqueira, Andrei Loginov, Marco Citron, Marina Black, Dima Sergeev, and Zhanna Kadyrova. The photographs created in various periods document the process of slow decay of the building of Horlivka’s Palace of Culture, erected in 1951. The house of culture is seen as one of those phantoms of the past that IZOLYATSIA opposed while working in Donetsk and that it is now trying to make sense of, working in Kyiv. As a side note to the exhibition, Zhanna Kadyrova’s Honour Board is a work that was on display in Donetsk and was damaged during IZOLYATSIA’s seizure in 2014. The work is exhibited unrestored, as a documental testimony of the events that took place three years ago.

Additionally, a new IZOLYATSIA Library will be opened on June 9, consisting of an interactive archive of the foundation’s projects of Donetsk period: catalogues, videos, books, photos, etc.

Moreover, the documentary film EURO 2012 in Donetsk by Andrey Gorokhov and DDK group will be screened. The movie shows the city through the eyes of its inhabitants and gives a unique opportunity to take a look at the everyday life of pre-war Donetsk during the European football championship.

The closing event of the evening will be a programme of experimental and dance electronic music from IZOLYATSIA’s friends, ЭFIR. The set will feature Stanislav Bobritskiy, Sasha Dolgiy, Dunaewsky69, Mussalina, and Komitet.

The IZOLYATSIA Day will take place at the IZONE Creative Community,  8 Naberezhno-Luhova Street.
