Russian illegal prison on IZOLYATSIA premises has been operational for 10 years.

Last summer Donetsk became apparent on the global art map. With the opening of the “Cai Guo-Qiang – 1040M Underground” project the city moved to the category of centers where world-class art has been creating. Magician and mathematician Cai Guo-Qiang has presented two new installations in Donetsk which were created in collaboration with IZOLYATSIA.

They were born from the artist’s impressions of visiting coal and salt mines of industrial Donbass. Shining of life, risk and anxiety of miners profession run through every line of  “Monuments on Shoulders” gunpowder portraits and are heard in the rhythm of old mining carts-lullabys which are singing about fantastic expectation and harsh reality of human life.

The Cais’ exhibit marked a series of “firsts”, the full significance of which will only be realized with the wisdom of hindsight: Cai’s first project in a former Soviet country, IZOLYATSIA’s and Donetsk’s first outing onto the global art scene, and Ukraine’s first art project to have been realized within an ex-industrial space. The realization of the project brought together people from the most diverse spheres such as coal-mining and salt-mining industries, local artists, cultural management, proactive young people still in search for their place as well as individuals with artistic credentials who have not been able to follow the artistic path.

By the Miners Day the Cai Guo-Qiang Studio and IZOLYATSIA have reached an agreement that the installation “Nursery Rhymes” from the “1040 M Underground” project becomes a part of the permanent exposition at IZOLYATSIA.

Opening hours: Thursday – Sunday, 10:00 – 18:00.
