IZOLYATSIA Open Call for U.S. based artists: Vol. 1

IZOLYATSIA in cooperation with the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine is pleased to announce an open call for American artists.

Given the institutional profile and the general socio-political context in Ukraine, IZOLYATSIA is interested in socially and politically engaged art practices, activism, urbanism, public art and community-based art as well as topics of politics and food.

Artists who employ different media to investigate post-industrial regeneration, creative economy, complex socio-political matters of migration and displacement, performative or participatory practices engaging with local communities, interdisciplinary research (social science, biology, music, robotic science, gender studies combined with art), contested histories and geopolitical issues are given preference.

As a research based residency, it is focused on accumulation of information, communication with local artists and community, immersion in the Ukrainian cultural and socio-political context.

For the duration of the residency each participant will receive:
– Coverage of up to $1500 for traveling costs;
– Accommodation in a private room with shared bathroom and kitchen;
– Per diem;
– Artist honorarium $700;
– Production costs $700;
– Access to the research base of the Donbas Studies project;
– Access to the studios at the IZONE Creative Community: photo lab, fab lab, etching room, silkscreening studio;
– Access to IZOLYATSIA’s own network of Ukrainian and international art institutions;
– Visits to the studios of emerging artists in Kyiv and across Ukraine to get an insider’s grasp of the local art scene.

During the residency, artists are expected to visit one more Ukrainian city where they will share their research and work through artist talks, discussions, screenings, workshops, performances, and/or presentations.

TOMBOLA! Interactive performance

On October 13, 2017 at 7PM IZOLYATSIA present a live participatory performance TOMBOLA! initiated by London-based artists Adam J B Walker and Vicki Thornton. This event was a result of following their six week long residencies in Kyiv, hosted at IZOLYATSIA and Soshenko 33, as part of the British Council SWAP: UK / Ukraine programme.

Taking the form of a film set, rehearsal space or sound stage, the event incorporate elements of performance and non-performance and open up and share overlapping ideas that have emerged for both artists through the residency process.

Visitors invited to join the celebration and to explore and exchange questions around reenactment, fakery, chance, memory and subjectivity.

Vicki Thornton is an artist and filmmaker working between the cinema and the gallery. Her works combines documentary and fiction filmmaking approaches to examine relationships between place, memory, performance and identity. Recent film presentations include Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, Czech Republic; PÖFF Black Nights, Tallinn, Estonia; DOKLeipzig, Germany; Cambridge Film Festival, UK; Alchemy Moving Image Festival, Scotland; and Clermont-Ferrand, France . Graduating from the Royal College of Art, London, she is currently undertaking a practice-based PhD at Queen Mary, University of London.

Adam J B Walker obtained an MA in Fine Art, Chelsea College of Arts. Within his research-based practice Walker looks to open up questions around labour and production and how they may or may not be deemed valuable, worthwhile or meaningful. He employs a wide variety of media, with text, performance and video being most frequently returned to.

Anton Pronenko participate in IZOLYATSIA residents exchange programme

From September 17 to October 24, 2017, artist Anton Pronenko will be a resident of Oberpfälzer Künstlerhaus in Schwandorf, Germany.

Anton Pronenko was selected among the participants of the Art Wednesday project based on his successful experience of cooperation with IZOLYATSIA and IZONE; and his active position in popularising art knowledge. Anton has never been to international residences despite his extensive experience in the art field.

Anton was born in Lviv in the family of a restorer artist. He graduated from Taras Shevchenko State Art School and later National Academy of Visual Arts and Architecture, Scenography and Screen Arts Department. Anton works in various techniques, inspired by the works of the Renaissance masters; he also teaches, conducting classes on urban sketching. Anton has organised a series of lectures on art history at the IZONE Creative Community as well as other institutions.

In early November, Anton Pronenko will hold an informal artist talk at IZONE, sharing his impressions and results of the residence.

Anton Pronenko’s residency is a result of the cooperation between IZOLYATSIA and Oberpfälzer Künstlerhaus. In June 2017, photographer Eveline Kooijman visited Kyiv as part of the same exchange programme.

From September 2 to October 15, 2017, British artist and filmmaker Vicki Thornton will be the new resident at IZOLYATSIA, as part of the British Council SWAP: UK / Ukraine programme.

Vicki Thornton works in the field of visual art. Her work combines documentary and fiction filmmaking approaches to examine relationships between place, memory, performance and identity. Recent film presentations include Czech Republic; PÖFF Black Nights, Tallinn, Estonia; DOKLeipzig, Germany; Cambridge Film Festival, UK; Alchemy Moving Image Festival, Scotland; and Clermont-Ferrand, France. Graduating from the Royal College of Art, London in 2011, she is currently undertaking a practice-based PhD at Queen Mary, University of London.

During her residency at IZOLYATSIA, Vicki will work on new video works.

Vicki Thornton’s residency is made possible within the framework of the SWAP: UK / Ukraine Artist Residency Programme co-organised by the British Council Ukraine and Liverpool Biennial. The programme aims to connect artists from Ukraine and the UK and support their professional development and internationalisation.

Vicki Thornton will be the first resident of the new space created by IZOLYATSIA exclusively for Residency programme participants.

Artist talk of Rafael Bustillos

On July 31, at 7 PM, the IZONE Creative Community host Rafael’s informal artist talk where he show his installation made during the residency.

Rafael Bustillos at IZOLYATSIA

From July 1 to August 1, 2017, IZOLYATSIA is hosting the USA-based artist Rafael Bustillos in Kyiv as part of its artist-in-residence programme.

Rafael was born and grew up in Mexico and moved to the United States in 1999. For many years he worked as a psychotherapist. Rafael graduated from the Master’s Program in Fine Arts at the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI). In his artistic practice, Rafael uses the “silence language of materials” and the time as creator which influences the surface of objects, changing the texture and structure of works.

Within the framework of his residency at IZOLYATSIA, Rafael exploring theme of memory and architecture, and also will create site specific installation using photos and building materials of the destroyed houses.

On July 31, at 7 PM, the IZONE Creative Community will host Rafael’s informal artist talk will show his installation made during the residency.

Artist talk of Evelina Kooijman

On June 27, at 7 PM the IZONE Creative Community will host the Evelin’s no official artist talk during which she tell about the film eco-display (with coffee, soda and other ingredients) and will show few works made during residency.

From June 1 to July 1, 2017 German-based photographer Eveline Kooijman will stay in Kyiv as part of the artist-in-residence programme by IZOLYATSIA.

Eveline Kooijman holding a BA in Journalism. She developed her photographic skills at University of Applied photography, Fotovakschool, Amsterdam. Her work has been shown in exhibitions throughout Germany. In 2014 she received the Culture Award for Photography of the Bavarian Oberpfalz region.

Since 2009 her work concentrates on themes in which she combine scientific facts with personal stories. Eveline visualise facts and figures from physical law, astronomical and mathematical science. She draw connections between topics, such as the rotation of the earth, the collapse of stars to black holes and the origin of the carbon-atoms in our bodies.

Within the residence in IZOLYATSIA Eveline will work on the IZONE FotoLab basis and will explore the floral symbols of Ukraine and will make photos using FDK – rarity large format camera.

Victoria’s Artist Talk

On April 18, at 7 PM, artist and performer Viktoria Myroniuk will give an artist talk at the IZONE Creative Community. She has participated in the artist-in-residency programme by IZOLYATSIA during the month of April.
