Russian illegal prison on IZOLYATSIA premises has been operational for 10 years.

Artist Nicholas Nazmi in residence at IZOLYATSIA

On July 15 — August 15, 2019, the New-York based artist Nicholas Nazmi is a new resident at IZOLYATSIA.

Nicholas Nazmi is an animator, filmmaker, painter of Iranian origin, who currently lives and works in New York.

He is a graduate from Kenyon College and in 2015 he received a Digital Media Fellowship from MoMA PS1. His work is inspired by the tradition of poetry and storytelling in his family from Iran. His short film Trip / Safar, an interpretation of one of his father’s poems, premiered at the Istanbul International Experimental Film Festival in 2018. 

Only for 2018 he participated in such shows as Flux Factory Annual Auction, Flux Factory, New York; Istanbul International Experimental Film Festival, Istanbul, TR; The Grandmaster: Lau Kar-leung, The Museum of Modern Art, New York; No Budget Film Festival, Nitehawk Cinema, New York; New York Indie Theater Film Festival, New York.

His work in animation and painting is greatly inspired by the search of belonging and the way home is reoriented in our souls after displacement.

During his residency at IZOLYATSIA, he will work in collaboration with an artist and researcher Darya Tsymbalyuk and a film director Maria Voronchuk on an animated film based on the oral histories of internally displaced people  from Donbas. The stories that will form the future film have been collected by the Donbas Odyssey art project and Darya Tsymbalyuk as part of her PhD project on plant narratives and displacement. A working title of the future feature length doсufiction film is Displaced garden and the project is managed by Maria Voronchuk. Yulia Serdyukova has joined the team as a film producer. Displaced garden project received support from the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation.

On July 25, at 7PM, Nicholas together with Darya and Maria will give an artist-talk at the IZONE Creative Community, vul. Naberezhno-Luhova 8. 

At the talk, they will provide more information about the project they develop in Ukraine, as well as the artist will present his previous works.
