Artist Martina Smutna in residence at IZOLYATSIA

23 February 2017

From February 28 to March 26, 2017, a Prague-based artist Martina Smutna will stay in Kyiv as part of the artist-in-residence programme by IZOLYATSIA.

Martina graduated from the Prague Academy of Fine Arts and participated in many exhibitions and art projects in the Czech Republic, Austria, Germany, and Japan. She works in various media: painting, collage, objects, installations, and video. She is also a member of the Studio Without Master, an open platform for students and graduates of art academies. The goal of the Studio is to build a new form of cooperation between students and art education institutions.

Martina’s approach to visual arts is based on critical understanding of political events and social issues. She explores the transformations of collective memory, power, and competition in the art world. During her stay in Kyiv, Martina will focus on the influence of place and context on the artist and creative process.

Martina Smutna’s residency in Kyiv is made possible thanks to the cooperation with A.I.R. FUTURA (Prague) and the support of the Czech Center. As part of this programme, artist Juliana Höschlová visited Kyiv in November 2016.
