ALEXEY SALMANOV

Aleksey Salmanov was born in Rostov-on-Don, Russia, in 1976. He is the holder of Pinchuk Art Centre Prize 2009 and completed an apprenticeship at Olafur Eliasson’s studio in Berlin in 2010. Salmanov did not receive any formal training in art. His research interests lie at the exploration of the resource possibilities of photography and video.

His works are directed at the qualities of photography, which are typically associated with other mediums – movement, sound and three-dimensionality. Movement is seen as an antithetic quality in relation to photography and by expressing movement through static images Salmanov shifts ‘classical’ photography to a genre of informational dissemination in the context of a new media world.

Salmanov participated in: Gender: Seams of Patriarchy and Identity Tailoring, Medpunkt-IZOLYATSIA (Donetsk, 2012); Ukrainian Body, The Visual Culture Research Centre by the Council of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (Kyiv, 2012); Space Odyssey, Arsenal (Kyiv, 2011); Videozone V: The 5th International VideoArt Biennal (Tel Aviv, 2010); Eclipse-China, Reflex Art Gallery / Art-Strelka (Moscow, 2009); The Fall of the Wall, Art Next Gallery (New-York, 2009); UNIVERSAM, parallel program of the 3 Moscow Biennal, Moscow; dance-trash-glamour, Sputnik Gallery (New York, 2009).
