Opening of the Sugar Democracy installation

On Thursday, September 22, at 7 PM, IZOLYATSIA invites to the opening of the interactive sculpture installation Sugar Democracy.

Irish artists Brendan Jamison and Mark Revels who have been creating sugar sculptures for the past three years, including appearances at the Centre Pompidou, Tate Modern, 798 Art District in Beijing and other art centres around the globe, have built an installation in Kyiv, based on the sugar model of the Teacher’s House and Suprematist architectones by Kazimir Malevich.

These iconic buildings refer to the history of Ukrainian culture and its unrealised potential in need of reconsideration and a new push. The Teacher’s House, which hosted Ukraine’s first Parliament in 1917-1918, epitomises a kind of place where culture and education give rise to democracy. Around it, whimsical futuristic buildings will emerge, created by the Irish artists and Ukrainian architecture students.

At the opening, all the visitors will have a unique opportunity to build their own sugar sculptures, assisted by Brendan Jamison and Mark Revels themselves. Through a fun and playful approach, the Sugar Democracy celebrates the power of mass-collaboration and encourages all members of the public to participate, irrespective of age, gender, culture or race.

The opening will take place at 8 Naberezhno-Luhova Street, Second Floor.
